The device used for measuring power, torque, or force is called a dynamometer. The dyno helps in calculating the power produced by a motor or an engine concurrently measuring its rotational speed and torque. There are two kinds of dynamometers such as engine and chassis dynamometers.

The engine dyno can be coupled directly to the engine. The chassis dyno is used to measure the power and torque of the power train. The chassis dyno helps in measuring directly from the wheels without detaching the engine from the frame of the vehicle.

The prime usage of dynamometer is to effectively compare or analyze the performance or output of an engine. They cannot tell you beyond the test period or dyno run. These lagging indicators can provide knowledge limited to what occurs during the test period only. The dyno can evaluate the capability of an engine after you have used your best skills to design an engine. However, it can evaluate the competency of an engine at a particular moment in time only.

You can achieve effectiveness through dynamometers by running a dyno test on the engine. The information provided by the dyno regarding the performance of the engine can be enhanced if the need arises. This is a powerful tool for the top racers.

A dyno is a useful, handy, and an expensive piece of equipment. Therefore, you have to abide by certain aspects. Some dynos can be very noisy and the exhaust can be corrosive hence; it should be used in ventilated areas. The working area should be spacious with access to water supply for water brakes.
